Geological & Topographic 3D Modeling
Geological and topographic 3D modeling builds a volume-calculable 3D model of terrain, a mining site or a subsurface layer from drone photogrammetry, LiDAR scanning or map data. It is used for soil surveys, earthworks planning and mining site presentations.
What is geological and topographic 3D modeling?
Geological/topographic 3D modeling builds a three-dimensional digital model of terrain, a mining site or a subsurface layer from drone photogrammetry, LiDAR scanning or map data. The result is a topographic 3D model from which volumes can be calculated, sections taken and presentations built.
This service is a larger-scale, site/mining-focused extension of 3D terrain modeling, which models the parcel a building project sits on; for the photogrammetry pipeline see the point-cloud section on our 2D to 3D conversion page.
Where is geological/topographic modeling used?
Mining and quarry sites
3D topographic models for stockpile volume, excavation planning and site presentations.
Soil survey presentations
Explaining borehole and layer data to investors or institutions visually.
Earthworks and pre-construction sites
Visualizing excavation volume and terrain slope before construction starts.
Infrastructure and road projects
Modeling terrain cross-sections and elevation change along a route.
From site data to a 3D model
Data capture
Drone photogrammetry, LiDAR scanning or your existing map/point-cloud data is used.
Point cloud processing
Raw data is cleaned, denoised and scaled.
Surface and layer model
The terrain surface and, if needed, subsurface layers are built as a 3D mesh.
Presentation and output
Volume calculations, sections and presentation-ready visuals/animation are delivered.
What data can we start from?
If you have drone photos, LiDAR scans, a geological map or borehole logs, we start from those; if not, we can advise on the right equipment and method for a site survey. The output is a volume-calculable 3D model, section visuals and, optionally, an interactive presentation at the level of our 3D mechanical simulation.
Frequently asked questions
Is geological 3D modeling the same as terrain modeling?
Closely related but different in scale: terrain modeling usually covers the parcel a building sits on; geological/topographic modeling covers larger work such as a mining site, a wide area or subsurface layers.
Can modeling be done without drone data?
Yes, if you have maps, borehole logs or a point cloud we can start from those; if a site survey is needed we advise on method.
Can volume (excavation/stockpile) calculations be produced?
Yes, volume and section calculations can be extracted from the topographic 3D model; this is a common output for mining and earthworks presentations.
