Reverse Engineering: Turning a Physical Part into a Digital Model

What is reverse engineering and when is it needed? The steps and use cases for measuring an existing part and turning it into a production-ready 3D model.

Sometimes you have the product but not its digital model. Reverse engineering is the process of measuring an existing physical part and turning it into a production-ready 3D model. So an old part can be reproduced, improved or documented.

When is it needed?

  • Spare parts: reproducing a part that’s out of production.
  • Improvement: measuring an existing design to improve it.
  • Documentation: a digital archive and technical documentation.

How we work

Starting from the part’s dimensions or scan data, we build a clean, editable 3D model. This is the core of our reverse engineering modeling service and rests on the 3D technical modeling discipline.

The result is delivered in the right format for 3D printing or manufacturing — we cover format choice in 3D file formats.

Frequently asked questions

I only have the physical part — is that okay? Yes. We produce a production-ready model from dimensions or scan data.

Can we improve the model later? Yes; because we build editable topology, improvement is possible.
